The 1851 Trust is the Official Charity of Land Rover BAR, the British America’s Cup team.
The 1851 Trust is named after the year of the Great Exhibition when the America’s Cup race was first held around the Isle of Wight; beginning the challenge that Land Rover BAR has now embraced – to bring the Cup home.
Team Principal and Skipper, Sir Ben Ainslie and HRH the Duchess of Cambridge are Patrons of the 1851 Trust.
Purpose of the 1851 Trust
Sir Ben Ainslie describes the purpose of the 1851 Trust; “I am determined to use the excitement of Land Rover BAR's challenge to win the America’s Cup to engage and inspire young people about the range of opportunities available to them.”
The 1851 Trust aims:
To use the excitement of Land Rover BAR as a real-life example of the application of science & technology (STEM) subjects to inspire young people to choose STEM subject and career pathways.
To help young people see a future for themselves in STEM related study and careers
To educate young people on the environmental impact of our behaviours and how they can be part of the solution, with particular emphasis on ocean health.
To provide young people with the opportunity to try sailing, to build their confidence and foster teamwork, in combination with STEM and sustainability activities.
